It’s not hard to find nutrition advice nowadays, it’s harder to escape it! Just open up TikTok or IG and you’re inundated with nutrition tips / “what I ate in a day” / “my morning routine” / “the supplement to fix all evil…”.

You can’t even hide from it when you’re wanting to chill out with Netflix, with the latest (biased) nutrition documentary being promoted.

But finding a qualified and Registered Nutritionist who truly caters to your individual needs can be a game changer.

In this article, we’ll explore the expectations of working with a Nutritionist vs the reality of personalised nutrition and working with Alexandra Marie MSc Nutrition clinic.

Expectation:

Many assume working with a nutritionist involves basic dietary advice and generic supplements, missing the mark on individualised care. You’ll be told about 5-a-day, upping your fibre and drinking enough water. Perhaps track some macros, calorie count, or follow a cookie-cutter diet plan.

Reality:

As a practitioner with a MSc in personalised nutrition and member of the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), my approach goes beyond the surface. I delve deep into your health history, genetic makeup, and lifestyle to craft personalised strategies for lasting change. We may look into specialised laboratory testing to get to root causes of underlying symptoms (that’s not available on the NHS), I’ll delve into recent blood test results (even if you’ve been told they are “normal”). And there’s never a one-size-fits-all diet plan to follow. Read more about testing here.

Expectation:

There's a misconception that personalised nutrition is reserved for the elite, inaccessible to the average individual.

Reality:

On the contrary, I believe optimal health should be accessible to all. Sadly sometimes the testing and level of supported needed does come at a cost. I truly want to empower individuals from all backgrounds to take control of their wellbeing, so try to do this with free educational workshops, articles on this website, and also working with labs that offer payment plans, along with myself for programmes.

Expectation:

Collaborating with a nutritionist might seem like a one-off interaction, lacking ongoing support and engagement.

Reality:

My commitment to your health journey is solid. I work in programmes not one-offs, so we can regularly check in and see how symptoms are, what’s working/what you’re finding hard etc, so we can constantly adapt this for you. Behind the scenes I spend hours looking into in-depth research on your case, collaborating with other healthcare professionals. Basically, I'm dedicated to guiding you every step of the way & ensuring it’s working for you for lifelong change.

EXPECTATION:

A Nutritionist will only consider food and diet.

Reality:

I look far beyond food, we have to. I’ll also delve into and consider your digestion (you are what you absorb, not what you eat after all), lifestyle, stress, environment, toxins, and exercise. They are all so interlinked, so only looking at one in isolation just won’t get the results you need.

Expectation:

Nutrition is often associated with short-term fixes, failing to address underlying health issues. You worry, you might feel good whilst working with someone, then perhaps “I’ll fall off the wagon” and symptoms will return.

Reality:

With personalised nutrition, we address the root causes of your health concerns, fostering sustainable, lifelong changes - never a quick, short-term fix.
